I spent the most wonderful afternoon hosting the, “Colleagues Annual Spring Luncheon” to benefit L.A.’s Children’s Institute. Eight hundred women came to show their support for the “Colleagues”, a charity group founded in 1950. They have donated over $25 million to serve L.A’s most vulnerable children harmed by community, abuse, family violence and neglect. It was a powerful room and the air was filled with electricity to honor this years recipient of, “The Champion of Children Award” to Marlo Thomas. Legendary actor Henry Winkler did the honors. Her loving husband Phil Donahue never took his eyes of his wife.
The award recognizes her work on behalf of children every where through “St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital”. It also included her rich body of work over her 40 year career as an actress, philanthropist, producer, innovator and life changer. She inspired a generation of women, me included in TV’s “That Girl” in the 60’s. Marlo produced children’s book, album and TV special “Fee to Be You and Me in1972 winning an Emmy, Peabody, Grammy, Golden Globe and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. After her speech on her work with St. Judes, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. So moving, compelling and emotional! #Women who inspire!
